Managing members

The member list, join requests, promoting and demoting, restrictions, timeouts, removal and bans.

Member management lives under the Space's Members settings. What you can do there depends on your level: Moderator can review join requests and apply restrictions and timeouts, and Admin can additionally change people's levels, remove them, and ban them.

Without the member capability the page says so instead of showing a roster you cannot act on.

The member list

The list shows each member's name, role, restrictions, and the date they joined. Search it by name or username, and filter it by role.

Long rosters come in pages rather than loading everything at once.

Join requests

In a request-to-join Space, applicants wait under Join requests, with the date they asked and any message they wrote. Reviewing them needs Moderator or above.

  • Approve admits them at the Space's default member level. Approve all admits everybody waiting in one step.
  • Reject declines. Don't notify them rejects quietly.

Neither can be undone as such: to reverse an approval, remove the member; a rejection has no inverse, and the person may ask again 24 hours later. Both decisions are recorded in the Space's audit log.

Approving is rate limited per approver, so a queue is worked at a human pace. Rejecting is not, so clearing spam is never blocked.

While the Space is at its member limit, approving waits: the request stays in the queue until there is room. The same holds for accepting an invite and for lifting a ban. See how many members a Space can have.

Promoting and demoting

Set a member's Level from their row. This needs Admin.

You cannot set anyone to your own level or above, and you cannot change the level of somebody already at it. The Owner level is not handed out this way at all — see ownership transfer.

Newcomers do not need promoting: unless the owner has turned it off, a Newcomer is moved up to Member automatically once they have been in the Space long enough and taken part often enough. See Roles and permissions.

Restrictions and timeouts

A restriction narrows what one member may do, on top of their role:

Restriction Effect
No restriction The role alone applies
Read only Can read, cannot contribute
No posting Cannot post to the feed
No chat Cannot send messages
No articles Cannot write articles

A timeout is time-limited: 1 hour, 24 hours, or 7 days, and it lifts by itself. Clear timeout ends it early. A member in a timeout is marked Timed out until in the list.

Restrictions and timeouts only ever take capabilities away. Neither removes the member, and neither deletes anything they wrote.

Removing and banning

Both need Admin, and neither reaches somebody at your own level or above.

  • Remove ends the membership. The person can come back under whatever join mode the Space has.
  • Ban ends it and keeps them out. You can add an optional Reason, which the person sees on the Space page.

Both are confirmed first, and both are recorded in the Space's audit log. What they wrote stays where it is: use moderation to take down specific content.

The member list can be switched from Active to Banned to show the banned members and when each was banned. Lift ban lets a person come back under whatever join mode the Space has.

Neither reaches beyond this Space. To stop somebody contacting you personally, see Blocking, muting, and hiding.

Members leaving on their own

Any member can leave from the Space's settings. Two exceptions: a member in an active timeout has to wait for it to end, and the owner must transfer ownership or delete the Space first.
