Promoting your content

Paying credits to boost a post, article, or event, what a promotion does, and what readers are told.

A promotion spends credits to lift one piece of your own content in ranking for a while. It is the only advertising on Novagora, and it is always labelled.

What you can promote

A post, an article, or an event that:

  • you own — you wrote the post or article, or you own or organise the event. Content in a Space is promotable only by that same person, and only while they still have the right to post, write or manage events there;
  • is live — a post or article that is a draft, still scheduled, or held by moderation cannot be promoted, and an event that has already ended cannot either;
  • has no live promotion already. One at a time per item.

Promoting is done from the content itself, in the mobile app and on the web. You can buy up to ten promotions an hour. Your wallet keeps the record of what you have promoted before.

Buying a promotion

  1. Open the content and choose Promote.
  2. Pick a tier — Boost, Spotlight, or Feature. Each tier shows its current credit price and who it reaches; Compare tiers below the list sets them side by side.
  3. Confirm. The screen then shows the running promotion with a link to its results.

The price depends on the tier and on what you promote: a post, an article, and an event each have their own prices.

The screen shows your available balance next to the price, and what it will be afterwards. If you do not have enough, it says so rather than failing at the till, and points you at your wallet — credits themselves are bought in the mobile app.

The welcome gift is spent first, then earned credits, then allowance credits, then purchased ones — see Your credit wallet.

If the price changes between the moment you were shown it and the moment you confirm, the purchase is refused rather than charged at a price you did not agree to. Read the new price and decide again.

What a promotion does

Every promotion runs for 24 hours, is paid in credits, and is labelled Promoted. Each tier reaches further than the one before:

  • Boost lifts the item higher in For You and in the Space's feed for your followers and the Space's members — the people who already get your content.
  • Spotlight does the same, and also shows the item in For You to people who don't follow you or the Space, in a Promoted spot. Those spots are rare: never more than one promoted item in every ten feed items. Someone who has been shown your item there is not shown it again during the window, and the item goes first to people whose interests match its Space.
  • Feature does everything Spotlight does, and also places the item in the Promoted spot on Explore for people who are signed in.

Spotlight and Feature only exist for public content. A post in a private Space, a private account's post, or an article or event that isn't public can be promoted with Boost, and the promote screen says why the other tiers are missing.

A higher tier also buys more ranking weight, and the tier you bought is captured at purchase — a later price change does not alter a promotion already running. Impressions from the Promoted spots count in your results like any other.

It does not change who can see the content. A post in a private Space stays in that Space, and a private account's content stays with its followers; only public content is shown to people outside your audience. A promotion never reaches someone who blocked or muted you, muted the Space, or hid the item, and a reader's muted words apply to it wherever they apply to other content.

What readers see

Promoted content carries a Promoted label wherever it appears. Nobody else is shown the tier, the credits you spent, the ranking weight, or when the window ends — those are yours, in your own purchase history.

The label is the point: an advertisement on Novagora always says it is one.

Your promotion history

In the mobile app, Promotion purchases in your wallet lists what you promoted; on the web, choose Promotions under Show activity in your credit activity. Each entry lists the kind of thing you promoted, the tier, the credits spent, and the window it ran for. Opening one shows its results, the ranking points it bought, and a link to the content. The list names the kind rather than the title on purpose — a title is the target's to change, and a deleted target would leave the row unreadable.

History keeps working after the fact. A promotion that has ended stays readable, and so does one whose content was later deleted — although in that case there is nothing left to open.

Ending and refunds

A promotion runs to the end of its window unless it ends early. You can stop your own promotion from its details; stopping early does not refund credits.

Novagora can end a promotion in a moderation or safety context — when the promoted content is removed or held from feeds, or when the promotion itself is revoked. Content released from a hold later does not resume its promotion. Then the unused share of its credits comes back: the time left of the 24 hours, counted to the minute, so a promotion ended after 6 hours returns 75 %. Purchased credits return to your purchased balance. Plan allowance returns to your allowance only while the allowance period it was spent in is still running; allowance from a period that has ended is not returned. Welcome-gift credits return to the welcome gift only while it has not expired, and earned credits return to the earned credits they came from. The refund shows in your credit history as Refund, and the ending is recorded in the platform's audit log. Removing your own promoted content, even as a moderator of its Space, refunds nothing. The Terms of Service set out the same rule. If you believe a promotion was ended in error, use the Contact page.

Promoting content does not exempt it from the Community Guidelines or from a Space's rules. Promoted content is reported and moderated like anything else.
