Blocking, muting, and hiding
The three ways to stop seeing someone, exactly what each one does, and how to undo them.
Three tools, in order of strength. Reach for the lightest one that solves the problem.
Which one to use
| Tool | What it does | Does the other person know? |
|---|---|---|
| Hide or not interested | Removes one post from your feed, or asks for less like it | No |
| Mute | Hides an account's activity from your feed | No |
| Block | Cuts contact off in both directions | Not told, but they notice when they try to reach you |
Muting and hiding shape your feed. Blocking changes what somebody can do.
Hiding a post
More options on any post (Feed options in the app) offers Hide this and Not interested. Hiding removes that post; not interested tells ranking you want less like it. Neither tells anyone anything.
Muting
Muting an account stops its activity reaching your feed. Mute someone with Mute on their profile, or with Mute name in a post's options. You can still open their profile, they can still see and reply to you, and they are not told.
Mute a Space the same way, from a post's options, to stop that Space's activity reaching your feed without leaving or unfollowing it.
Muting is not a notification setting. To quieten a Space's notifications instead, see per-Space notifications, and to silence a single conversation use Mute conversation in chat.
Blocking
Blocking is the strong one. Once you block someone:
- neither of you sees the other's content;
- they cannot follow you, message you, or interact with your posts;
- any existing follow relationship ends;
- you leave the group chats you shared with them.
An existing direct-message history stays available to both of you, but it is read-only while the block remains. Neither person can pin messages or see new read receipts from that conversation. Your private conversation-list controls, such as Pin conversation and Mute conversation, still work.
Large shared-chat clean-up finishes in the background, so a conversation may take a moment to disappear from the list.
A block always wins. A privacy exception that would otherwise let somebody see something cannot reopen anything for an account you have blocked; see Exceptions for specific people.
Nobody is told that you blocked them, but the block is not invisible in effect: somebody who tries to open your profile or message you will notice.
Undoing any of them
- On the web, Settings → Blocked & muted has a tab for each list: Blocked, Muted people, Muted words (the words you filter out of your feed; see Your privacy and your data), Hidden posts and Muted Spaces. More hidden lists opens the posts you marked not interested and the people you muted from your feed.
- In the app, Blocked & muted is one row in your settings with three segments — Blocked, Muted and Words. Hidden & muted content, under More settings, holds the hidden posts, the not-interested marks, the muted Spaces and people, and your muted words.
Every row has the action to put it back — Unblock, Unmute, Unhide or Undo, depending on the list. An account that has blocked you back is listed without its name, handle or picture, the same way its profile stops being reachable; the row stays, so undoing it still works.
Unblocking does not restore a follow relationship, or put you back in a group chat. It only stops the block.
Blocking is not reporting
Blocking protects you. It does not tell moderators anything, and nothing is reviewed because of it.
If a rule was broken, report it as well — the two work together, and a report plus a block is the right response to harassment. See Reporting content and getting help.
